Latino Community Development Agency hosts event for Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Victims

Domestic violence exists in Oklahoma, and the reported numbers from multiple studies conclude that one in three women experience abuse in their lives.
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Advocate Yovana Medina has worked for a year with the Latino Community Development Agency (LCDA), and said in only five months, the number of open cases for this year are more than the total of last years combined.
“In reality it’s sad that I have work, I wouldn’t like to have work, but it seems like in this past year, we have received double the amount of cases that we usually get,” she said.
Her time with the agency has not been easy. Medina said she she wouldn’t like to have work, but she is the first person domestic violence and sexual assault victims go to when they contact the agency.
“Maybe it’s a good thing, because our community is noticing our program and is looking for help. Normally a majority are women, but we are open to men as well. Men also can be victims of domestic violence,” Medina said.
With a fruitful and adequate program for victims, LCDA plans to organize an event on June 10 with resources and professionals ready to inform and help.
“We have a two-hour event planned out,” she said. The event will have presentations over identifying domestic abuse, and have invited lawyers who will explain the rights one has when confronted with abuse.
“What can you do to seek custody, or a divorce, or a restraining order? The lawyer will talk about these legal rights,” Medina said.
Apart from the legal information, the event will have an immigration lawyer to explain how to obtain a “VAWA” and a “U” visa. Both of these visas are available for victims of domestic abuse.
The “VAWA” visa is a visa for victims that are married with a resident or citizen of the United States. Domestic violence is considered a crime, and the “U” visa is offered to protect victims who are married to people who are not citizens or residents.
“At the end of the event, we will hold a panel with the lawyers and myself that will be open to questions from the people who attend,” Medina said.
The Rights and Resource Fair for Domestic Violence Victims will be held at the Latino Community Development Agency on June 10 located on 420 S.W. 10th St. from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
If you are or know of any victim of domestic violence or sexual abuse, do not hesitate to call Yovana Medina at 405-236-0773.
