JOIN THE FIGHT FOR CHILDREN'S HEALTH

El Latino American

Oklahoma City.-Every child deserves to be healthy, which is the mission at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
St. Jude representative Emily Drover has been working with the hospital for years, and completely backs the hospital and their goal to finding a cure.
“St. Jude is where doctors often send their toughest cases, because we have the best survival rates for the world’s toughest cancers,” she said. “When a family goes there, and they come from all fifty states and around the world, they never receive a bill. Travel, housing, food, it’s all covered. We just want a family just to worry about their child getting better. That’s our mission.”
The organization is freely sharing their research to anyone who requests it, which includes the hospitals and facilities in the Oklahoma city area. The organization is running more clinical trials than any other treatment center according to Drover.
“We’re constantly trying to find ways to have all of our materials in english and spanish, to always bring a multicultural element to all of our events,” she said.
The hospital is located in Memphis, Tennessee, but if your child is diagnosed with any form of childhood cancer, they can be accepted to the hospital and it’s many resources.
There is a three step process according to Drover. “First you would have to be 18 years or younger and have a childhood cancer or some sort. It has to be a disease that we are currently and actively treating and researching, and the third thing is, you need a referral from your physician or pediatrician. They may think you need to go there and get the best treatment possible.”
The patient stays with their family Drover says. The hospital pays for all food, stay, and treatment for the entirety of it. Drover said they believe that families should never receive a bill, and the family should worry about their child.
“Since we opened doors in 1962, the overall survival rate for childhood cancer has grown from 20 percent to 80 percent. We’ve come a really long way in just 55 years. We’re working to push it to 90 percent,” she said. “We won’t stop until no child dies from cancer.”
They offer a variety of events which contribute to St. Jude, their services and research. One event, ending August 20, allows people to give a monetary contribution while putting them in a raffle for a giveaway home in the Edmond area.
The St. Jude Dream Home giveaway is a raffle benefiting the Research Hospital and presents the chance to win a 3000-square ft. house. The money raised will go directly to the organization.
“Not only are you supporting childhood cancer, but you have a chance to win this awesome house,” she said. “We have open houses, this weekend and the next, where you can go and actually view the house before it’s given away.”
