Ex estrella de OU / NFL comparte palabras de aliento con estudiantes atletas de SEHS

OKLAHOMA CITY – Solo un día después de ser incluido en el Muro de la Fama de la Fundación OKCPS, el ex tackle defensivo de OU Football y estrella de la NFL Gerald McCoy regresó a su alma mater, Southeast High School, para compartir palabras de aliento con más de 100 estudiantes atletas, incluidos miembros del equipo de fútbol americano Southeast Spartans.

"¡¡Soy un SPARTANO!! ¡Siempre he sido un SPARTANO! ¡¡Siempre seré un SPARTANO!! Por lo tanto, cualquiera que haya caminado por estos pasillos antes que yo, conmigo o después de mí, lo considero familia", dijo Gerald McCoy. "Hay muchas personas que han trabajado en esa escuela que ayudaron a dar forma y moldear quién soy. Mientras estaba en el equipo de fútbol de SEHS, McCoy fue nombrado recluta de cinco estrellas y fue contactado por casi todas las universidades importantes del país antes de comprometerse con los Sooners. McCoy jugó para el entrenador Bob Stoops de 2006 a 2009, con el actual entrenador en jefe de OU, Brent Venables, como su coordinador defensivo. Después de una exitosa carrera universitaria como dos veces capitán del equipo y comenzando en los 40 juegos durante su carrera, fue uno de los mejores prospectos en el Draft de la NFL de 2010, convirtiéndose finalmente en la 3ra selección general de los Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "Gerald es una leyenda aquí en Southeast", dijo Scott Farley, director de SEHS. El día antes de su visita a SEHS, McCoy fue celebrado en el evento Wall of Fame de la Fundación de Escuelas Públicas de Oklahoma City, que fue creado para destacar a líderes influyentes en varios campos en todo el país y celebrar la rica historia y logros del sistema de escuelas públicas de OKC.  Gerald y otros tres ex alumnos de OKCPS, el Dr. Karl Hansen, la Dra. Kathryn Jeffery y  Gregory McPherson II, se unieron a otros 96 ex alumnos y líderes comunitarios que han sido admitidos desde que comenzó el Muro de la Fama en 1985.

Former OU / NFL Star Shares Words of Encouragement with SEHS Student Athletes

OKLAHOMA CITY– Just one day after he was inducted into the OKCPS Foundation Wall of Fame, former OU Football defensive tackle and NFL star Gerald McCoy returned to his alma mater, Southeast High School, to share words of encouragement with more than 100 student athletes, including members of the Southeast Spartans football team.

“I’m a SPARTAN!! Always have been a SPARTAN!! Always will be a SPARTAN!! Therefore, anybody who has walked these halls before me, with me, or after me I consider family,” said Gerald McCoy. “There are a lot of people who have worked in that school who helped shape and mold who I am. Anything I can do to help push this next generation forward I’m willing to do. I love my school and love spending time with all the former, current, and new staff and students. This school raised me, so I will forever be grateful. I AM A SPARTAN!! SEHS!! Southside of OKC!! THE 405!!”

While on the SEHS football team, McCoy was named a five-star recruit and was approached by nearly every major university in the country before committing to the Sooners. McCoy played for Coach Bob Stoops from 2006-2009, with current OU Head Coach Brent Venables serving as his Defensive Coordinator. After a wildly successful college career as a two-time team captain and starting in all 40 games during his career, he was one of the top prospects in the 2010 NFL Draft, ultimately becoming the 3rd overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After nine outstanding seasons in Tampa, he went on to play with the Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, and Las Vegas Raiders.

“Gerald is a legend here at Southeast,” said Scott Farley, principal at SEHS. “Although people often gravitate toward his athletic excellence, it’s his humility that he’s most known for inside these halls. He always inspired those around him with his school spirit and outgoing personality. Coach Walt Brewer recalls Gerald coming to all the basketball games and cheering on the teams.  SEHS is extremely proud of this Spartan and his many accomplishments.  It was fun to welcome him back home for a visit.”

The day before his visit to SEHS, McCoy was celebrated at the Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation’s Wall of Fame event, which was created to highlight influential leaders in various fields across the nation and celebrate the rich history and accomplishments of the OKC public school system.  Gerald and three other OKCPS alumni, Dr. Karl Hansen, Dr. Kathryn Jeffery and Gregory McPherson II, joined 96 other alumni and community leaders who have been inducted since the Wall of Fame began in 1985.

During his youth, Gerald’s father and late mother Patricia Diane instilled in him a deep appreciation for giving back to the less fortunate, which grew during his time as a Spartan and Sooner, resulting in Gerald and his wife, Ebony, investing much time, talent and treasure to support a variety of organizations throughout his NFL career.
