"OKC Necesita Voluntarios para campaña de Medición de Calor Extremo"
La ciudad de Oklahoma City está buscando cientos de voluntarios para ser parte de una campaña medición para medir el calor extremo en las áreas urbanas.
Se necesitan más de 300 personas para capturar datos de temperatura y calidad del aire en toda la ciudad a lo largo de rutas predeterminadas durante la madrugada, la tarde y la noche.
Los voluntarios, también conocidos como científicos de la calle, conectarán el equipo a la ventana de su vehículo y conducirán a lo largo de una ruta asignada, midiendo la temperatura del aire, la calidad del aire (partículas) y la ubicación de seguimiento. Los voluntarios serán emparejados en grupos de tres, incluyendo un conductor, un navegador y un respaldo.
Una vez que se complete la ruta, los voluntarios devolverán el equipo a un lugar designado para que lo use el próximo grupo de voluntarios. La campaña se llevará a cabo en uno de los días más calurosos del año, tentativamente fijado para el 12 de agosto, dependiendo de las condiciones climáticas.
Se planea una fecha de respaldo para el 26 de agosto. La capacitación de voluntarios se llevará a cabo virtualmente de 12-1 p.m. 13 de julio y 5:30-30 p.m. 27 de julio.
La Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica (NOAA) eligió a Oklahoma City como una de las 18 comunidades seleccionadas para participar en la campaña de mapeo de la Isla de Calor Urbano (UHI) de la NOAA 2023. El Concejo Municipal aprobó la subvención para el proyecto el 6 de junio.
Las areas de calor urbano, son áreas con pocos árboles y más pavimento que absorbe el calor, pueden ser hasta 20 grados más calientes que los vecindarios con más árboles, césped y menos asfalto negro. Los eventos de calor extremo son los eventos más mortales relacionados con el clima en todo el país, según la NOAA.
Algunos grupos son más vulnerables al calor, incluidos los ancianos, los niños, las personas embarazadas, las poblaciones minoritarias y de bajos ingresos, y las personas con afecciones de salud relacionadas con el corazón y los pulmones, diabetes y obesidad, entre otras afecciones.
Además del evento de voluntariado de un día, la Oficina de Sostenibilidad de la Ciudad e investigadores con tres colegios de la Universidad de Oklahoma organizarán talleres de educación y concientización. Las Facultades de Arquitectura del Paisaje, Salud Pública y Geografía de la OU también están llevando a cabo investigaciones sobre la vulnerabilidad al calor en Oklahoma City.
El primer taller se llevará a cabo de 10:30 a 11:30 a.m. 8 de julio en The Auditorium at The Douglass, 600 N High Ave.
Una vez que se complete la recopilación de datos, un contratista de NOAA, CAPA Strategies, creará un informe para que los tomadores de decisiones locales, planificadores y organizaciones de salud tomen medidas para reducir los impactos en la salud del calor extremo.
