OCCC Amplia Programa Mentor para Estudiantes Hispanos

Estudiantes conectados con mentores para el éxito 

Oklahoma Ciudad. - "Oklahoma City Community College es un lugar donde todos los estudiantes pueden venir y cambiar sus vidas. Pero, un segmento de nuestra población estudiantil estaba perdiendo esta oportunidad. Mostraron promesa e iniciativa. Solicitaron admisión, matriculados en clases, pero su tasa de éxito nunca coincidió con sus compañeros. Los jóvenes afroamericanos no tenían éxito como los estudiantes de otras áreas demográficas. Esto no sólo ocurría en OCCC, sino en todo el país. Esto fue inaceptable” dijo Dr. Steward -Presidente de Oklahoma City Community College.

“El promedio de calificaciones (GPA) para los estudiantes masculinos afroamericanos en OCCC era 2.04, que es el más bajo de cualquier grupo étnico. Después del primer semestre del programa de tutoría de SCMS, por sus iniciales en inglés, el promedio de GPA de fin de período para los participantes fue de 2.94 y aumentó de manera constante a 3.23. La tasa baja de persistencia del grupo ha superado el 90% cada año desde el inicio del programa’ agregó Dr. Steward.

El programa SCMS ha otorgado más de $36,000 en becas y el 100% de los graduados del programa se transfieren a instituciones de cuatro años.

"En concordancia con la misión de OCCC de cambiar la vida del estudiante, el propósito de (SCMS) es conectar a los estudiantes con mentores para mejorar el rendimiento académico, retención, y las tasas de graduación para las poblaciones de estudiantes desatendidas. El objetivo es prepararlos para la entrada exitosa en la fuerza de trabajo o la transferencia a una institución académica de cuatro años. Esto se logra mediante el suministro de mentores que proporcionan relaciones de apoyo que facilitan la finalización del programa académico para cada estudiante ", dijo el Presidente Steward. 

"Con el éxito del programa con los estudiantes masculinos afroamericanos, podemos confrontar que el concepto funciona, por lo que estamos seguros de que el mismo éxito se llevará a cabo a medida que avanzamos a la incorporación de los estudiantes Hispanos masculinos y femeninos a este programa  de  tutoría", añadió Dr. Jerry Steward.

"La necesidad es más grande que nunca, los desafíos en la comunidad afroamericana son a veces un poco diferentes a los desafíos en la comunidad hispana. Ambos comunidades tienen una enorme oportunidad, el estudiante de ambas comunidades son brillantes, son trabajadores, quieren lograr alcanzar una vida mejor para sí mismos y sus familias, y vamos a ayudarles a hacer eso". 

"No estamos aquí solamente para hacerte mejor estudiante, estamos aquí para hacerte un mejor hombre", dijo Bryon Dickens -Director del Programa SCMS. "Y ahora lo expandiremos para decir, estamos aquí para hacerte un mejor hombre y una mejor mujer", dijo OCCC Presidente-Dr. Jerry Steward.

"A todos los que son estudiantes en el programa, quiero decirles, la expectativa que tengo para usted es que tenga éxito, siéntanse orgullosos de ustedes mismos y hagan sentir a su familia orgullosos, pero, espero que algún día regresen y apoyen este programa" 

El programa conectando estudiantes con mentores para el éxito (SCMS) está diseñado para que los mentores se asocien con los estudiantes que están buscando ayuda en una o más de las siguientes áreas:

• Exploración y orientación profesional
• Logros académicos
• Planes de post-graduación
• Oportunidades de networking con profesionales locales
• Fomento de la confianza
• Apoyo y estímulo positivos

Las investigaciones demuestran que los estudiantes con mentores tienen mayores GPAs y son más propensos a permanecer en la Universidad en comparación con los estudiantes académicamente similares que no tienen mentores. 

Además, los estudiantes universitarios de primera generación y minorías étnicas se ven más afectados por tener un mentor que pueda ayudarles a navegar por la experiencia de educación superior, lo que lleva a una mayor persistencia y tasas de retención. 

A medida que el programa SCMS coincide con los estudiantes con profesionales en campos de carrera similares, los estudiantes reciben claridad sobre qué habilidades son críticas para su profesión elegida y qué cursos son necesarios para alcanzar esas habilidades. Los estudiantes también adquieren una mayor comprensión de la necesidad de completar su grado para ser más competitivos y comercializables.

Oklahoma city. - “Oklahoma City Community College is a place where all students can come and change their lives. But, a segment of our student population was missing out on this chance. They showed promise and initiative. They applied for admission, enrolled in classes, but their success rate never matched their peers. African-American males were not succeeding like students in other demographics. This wasn’t just occurring at OCCC—but nationwide. This was unacceptable.

The average grade point average (GPA) for African American male students at OCCC is 2.04, which is the lowest of any ethnic demographic. After the first semester of the SCMS mentorship program, the average end-of-term GPA for the participants was 2.94 and it steadily increased to 3.23. The group’s fall-to spring persistence rate has exceeded 90% each year since the inception of the program.

Several students have made the President’s Honor Roll and the Vice President’s Honor Roll and have been inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. 

The SCMS program has awarded over $36,000 in scholarships and 100% of program graduates transfer to four-year institutions.

“In keeping with OCCC’s mission to ultimately change lives, the purpose of Students Connecting with Mentors for Success (SCMS) is to improve academic achievement, retention, and graduation rates for underserved student populations. The goal is to prepare them for successful entry into the workforce or transfer to a four-year academic institution. This is achieved by furnishing mentors who provide supportive relationships that facilitate academic program completion for every student” said President Steward. 

“With the success of the Program with African American male students, we can confront that the concept works, so we are confident that the same dramatic success will take place as we move forward to the addition of the Spanish male and female students to this mentorship program” said President Steward.

“The need is greater than ever, the challenges in the African American community are sometimes a little different than the challenges in the Hispanic Community. Both community have enormous opportunity, the student from both communities are bright, they are hardworking, they want to achieve , they want to go on a better lives for themselves and their families, and we are going to help them do that” 

“We are not here to make you better student only, we are here to make you a better men” said Bryon Dickens,  Program Director. “And now we will expand it to say, we are here to make you a better men and better women” said President Steward.

“To all of you who are students in the program, I want to say, the expectation that I have for you is you be successful, you make yourself and your family proud, but someday you come back and be supportive of this program” conclude President Steward.

The Students Connecting with Mentors for Success (SCMS) program is designed to partner mentors with students who are seeking assistance in one or more of the following areas:

• Career exploration and guidance
• Academic achievement
• Post-graduation plans
• Networking opportunities with local professionals
• Connection to internships and entry-level positions
• Time management tips
• Personal character development
• Confidence building
• Positive support and encouragement

Research shows that students with mentors have higher GPAs and are more likely to remain in college compared to academically similar students who do not have mentors. 

Additionally, first-generation, ethnic-minority college students are more greatly impacted by having a mentor who can help them navigate the higher education experience, which leads to improved persistence and retention rates. 

As the SCMS program matches students with professionals in similar career fields, students receive clarity regarding what skills are critical for their chosen profession and what courses are needed to attain those skills. Students also gain a greater understanding of the need to complete their degree in order to be more competitive and marketable.

Student Jessenia Vicuña-mentee -pursuing mayor in Psychology, said “statistics show that minorities are more likely to fail and not completed their education, so I am thankful to OCCC for giving us the opportunity to change that statistic, this mentoring program means a lot to me, as a first college generation, with the guidance and experience from my mentor I know  I am going to succeed.”
