Oklahoma lanza HOPE para combatir el cáncer de pulmón

Oklahoma Launches HOPE to Fight Lung Cancer
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — A new statewide initiative is working to help more Oklahomans detect lung cancer earlier while connecting them with resources to quit smoking and navigate the healthcare system.
The HOPE Initiative — Helping Oklahomans with Prevention and Early Detection: Lung Cancer Screening & Tobacco Cessation Saves Lives — launched July 29 through a partnership involving the American Lung Association, Oklahoma Hospital Association, OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center, the University of Oklahoma and other organizations across the state.
The initiative is supported by a TSET Legacy Grant from the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust. Its goal is to increase awareness of early lung cancer detection, improve access to low-dose CT scans and connect eligible residents with tobacco-cessation resources.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Oklahoma, according to the American Lung Association. The state also has a higher smoking rate than the national average, with 14.1% of Oklahoma adults reporting that they smoke compared with 9.9% nationally.
Despite the state’s significant lung cancer burden, early detection remains underused. Only about one in 10 eligible Oklahomans receives recommended lung cancer screening, leaving many high-risk residents without an opportunity to find the disease at an earlier stage.
Lung cancer detection for people at high risk is performed using a low-dose computed tomography, or LDCT, scan. The test can identify lung cancer before symptoms develop, giving patients an opportunity to begin treatment earlier.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends an annual low-dose CT scan for adults 50 to 80 years old who have at least a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years.
A pack-year is a way to measure a person’s cumulative smoking history. For example, smoking one pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years equals 20 pack-years.
The low-dose CT scan is intended for people at increased risk who do not have symptoms. Anyone experiencing symptoms or other health concerns should talk with a healthcare professional.
The HOPE Initiative is designed to provide more than a referral for a CT scan.
Through the program, eligible Oklahomans can connect with Lung Health Navigators, who can help people understand whether they qualify for lung cancer detection, locate services and navigate the steps involved in getting care.
The initiative also connects participants with tobacco-cessation resources for those who want to quit smoking.
According to the American Lung Association, its Lung Health Navigators include registered nurses, respiratory therapists and certified tobacco-treatment specialists. Assistance is available by telephone, online chat and video. The program also provides help with transportation and other costs associated with lung cancer screening for eligible participants.
Organizers say the statewide partnership is intended to reduce barriers to early lung cancer detection, including for people living in rural communities.
The effort brings healthcare organizations and community partners together with the goal of making lung cancer detection and tobacco-cessation services easier to access.
For eligible residents, the program offers personalized support for understanding their risk, determining whether they qualify for a low-dose CT scan and connecting with available services.
Who should consider lung cancer detection?
According to current federal recommendations, people should talk with their healthcare provider about annual lung cancer screening if they:
• Are 50 to 80 years old;
• Currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years; and
• Have a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years.
The decision to undergo screening should be made with a healthcare professional, taking into account an individual’s health, smoking history and ability and willingness to undergo treatment if cancer is detected.
