En los últimos días, nuestra nación se ha visto sacudida por el trágico asesinato de Charlie Kirk, un evento que se desarrolló en tiempo real ante millones de personas en línea. No era solo una figura pública conocida. Era un esposo y un padre cuya vida fue arrebatada demasiado pronto. Mi corazón está con su esposa y sus dos hijos pequeños mientras enfrentan una pérdida inimaginable. Rezo para que encuentren consuelo al saber que Charlie estaba seguro en su salvación cristiana y que su trabajo e influencia continuarán marcando la diferencia.

Lamentablemente, este no fue un acto aislado de violencia. A principios de este año, la ex presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes de Minnesota, Melissa Hortman, su esposo, Mark, y el perro de su familia fueron asesinados en un tiroteo por motivos políticos en su casa. El senador estatal John Hoffman y su esposa, Yvette, también fueron blanco de ese ataque, pero sobrevivieron.

Estos son actos de violencia sin sentido. Nosotros, como nación, deberíamos poder estar en desacuerdo sin temer por nuestra seguridad o la seguridad de nuestros seres queridos. Charlie entendió ese principio y su vida nos recuerda la necesidad de mantenernos firmes en nuestras creencias mientras respetamos a los demás.

En otras noticias, me siento honrado de recibir el Premio al Legislador del Año 2025 de Mothers Against Drunk Driving junto con mis colegas, el representante John George y el senador Darrell Weaver. Los premios se anunciaron a principios de este verano y se nos entregarán formalmente en el 1er Evento Anual de Reconocimiento de las Fuerzas del Orden de Oklahoma el 25 de septiembre. Es un privilegio servir y estoy agradecido por el reconocimiento de una organización dedicada a salvar vidas.

Y finalmente, viajaré a Washington, D.C., para reuniones en la Casa Blanca durante la semana del 23 de septiembre. Esta es una oportunidad importante para nosotros como legisladores y para nuestro estado. Espero compartir detalles sobre estas discusiones en mi próxima columna.

Working for a Safer Future

In recent days, our nation has been shaken by the tragic killing of Charlie Kirk, an event that unfolded in real time before millions of people online. He was not just a well-known public figure. He was a husband and a father whose life was taken far too soon. My heart goes out to his wife and their two young children as they face an unimaginable loss. I pray they find comfort in knowing that Charlie was secure in his Christian salvation and that his work and influence will continue to make a difference.

Sadly, this was not an isolated act of violence. Earlier this year, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband, Mark, and their family dog were killed in a politically motivated shooting at their home. State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also targeted in that attack but survived.

These are senseless acts of violence. We, as a nation, should be able to disagree without fearing for our safety or the safety of those we love. Charlie understood that principle, and his life reminds us of the need to stand firm in our beliefs while respecting others.

In other news, I am honored to receive the 2025 Legislator of the Year Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving along with my colleagues, Rep. John George and Sen. Darrell Weaver. The awards were announced earlier this summer, and we will be formally presented with them at the 1st Annual Oklahoma Law Enforcement Recognition Event on Sept. 25. It is a privilege to serve, and I am grateful for the recognition from an organization dedicated to saving lives.

And finally, I will travel to Washington, D.C., for meetings at the White House during the week of Sept. 23. This is an important opportunity for us as legislators and for our state. I look forward to sharing details about these discussions in my next column.
