El Seguro Social Restablecerá la Tasa de Recuperación de Sobrepagos La Actualización de la Política apoya la Responsabilidad Fiscal
La Administración del Seguro Social (SSA, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció que aumentará la tasa de retención de sobrepago predeterminada para los beneficiarios del Seguro Social al 100 por ciento del beneficio mensual de una persona. La Oficina del Actuario Principal estima que este cambio resultará en un aumento en las recuperaciones de sobrepagos (es decir, un ahorro en el programa) de aproximadamente $7 mil millones en la próxima década.
"Tenemos la gran responsabilidad de ser buenos administradores de los fondos fiduciarios para el pueblo estadounidense", dijo Lee Dudek, Comisionado Interino del Seguro Social. "Es nuestro deber revisar la política de reembolso de sobrepagos para que vuelva a ser una retención total, como lo fue durante la administración de Obama y la primera administración de Trump, para salvaguardar adecuadamente los fondos de los contribuyentes".
“La agencia se esfuerza por pagar a la persona correcta la cantidad correcta en el momento adecuado y emite pagos correctos a la mayoría de los beneficiarios. Cuando se produce un sobrepago, la agencia está obligada por ley a solicitar el reembolso” confirma el Comisionado.
A partir del 27 de marzo, la agencia comenzará a enviar avisos sobre la nueva tasa de retención del 100 por ciento, en lugar del reciente ajuste de solo el 10 por ciento. El cambio en la tasa de retención se aplica a los nuevos sobrepagos relacionados con los beneficios del Seguro Social. La tasa de retención para los beneficiarios actuales con un sobrepago antes del 27 de marzo no cambiará y no se requiere ninguna acción. La tasa de retención para los sobrepagos de Seguridad de Ingreso Suplementario sigue siendo del 10 por ciento.
Las personas a las que se les pague en exceso después del 27 de marzo se colocarán automáticamente en recuperación completa a una tasa del 100 por ciento del pago del Seguro Social. Si alguien no puede pagar la recuperación total de su sobrepago, puede comunicarse con el Seguro Social al 1-800-772-1213 o con su oficina local para solicitar una tasa de recuperación más baja.
Además, las personas tienen derecho a apelar la decisión de sobrepago o el monto. Pueden pedirle al Seguro Social que renuncie al cobro del sobrepago, si creen que no fue su culpa y no pueden pagarlo. La agencia no busca recuperaciones mientras esté pendiente una apelación inicial o una exención.
