Escuela celebra graduados

School Celebrates Graduates

11 Young People Receive Diplomas and Participate in Commencement Ceremonies

Today marks the last day of school before a short summer break for students at the Oklahoma Youth Academy Charter School (OYACS) sites in Tecumseh and Manitou, Oklahoma.
During the month of June, 13 young people at the two charter school campuses received their diplomas after completing their course work through the charter school program operated through the Office of Juvenile Affairs.
At the charter school at the Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile Center (SWOJC) in Manitou; five young men received their diplomas at the commencement ceremony earlier this month. Each young man received senior pictures, provided a short speech and was applauded by family, friends and guests in attendance.
SWOJC campus Principal Leticia Sanchez commended the five young men on their hard work and encouraged them to remember that while everyone celebrating alongside of them believed in their abilities to succeed, it is most important that they believe in their own abilities.
Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center (COJC) OYACS campus in Tecumseh celebrated five students, and one young lady, from Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center for Girls (OJCG) Norman campus, as they took part in graduation ceremonies held in Tecumseh on June 16th. One other student achieved their GED but could not attend the ceremony due to early release.
Keynote speaker, Senator Kim Daniels (Bartlesville) spoke to each individual student. She shared with the audience the students' dreams for when they leave OJA care and their hopes of returning home to find jobs or continue with their education. "I celebrate you as a mom, and I celebrate you as a citizen of the state of Oklahoma. Whatever circumstance brought you here don't amount to a hill of beans today, and they don't matter to me, at all. What matters to me, is the promise and the future you have going forward", stated Senator Daniels.
Many family members were excited, and just as nervous as the students themselves as the moment approached. The staff leadership encourages every student at each facility to attend the ceremonies to honor their peers, and to witness for themselves what the ultimate education goal is all about. A diploma.
Also in attendance at the COJC ceremony; former State Representative and current OJA Board member Jason Nelson; Tom Bates, a Special Advisor to Governor Mary and the family and friends of current residents at COJC.
"I'm so proud of the hard work that these young men and young women put in to their studies to achieve their academic requirements. In the short time that we have them, they will come away with a high school diploma that will help them transition back to their communities, and with a better step forward towards success", stated Melissa White, OYACS Director of Education. "I'm especially grateful for the teachers and staff at each campus that dedicate their time and hard work to help each student reach this important milestone".
OJA looks forward to many more of these successful achievements for the OYACS students, and what the future holds for each one of them.
