Investigan a General Motors por posibles fallas en sus motores

Tras recibir numerosas quejas de consumidores, la Administración Nacional de Seguridad del Tráfico en las Carreteras (NHTSA) ha abierto una nueva investigación sobre vehículos de General Motors por posibles fallas en el motor de sus vehículos.
GM declaró que el problema, descrito por la NHTSA como "pérdida de potencia debido a una falla del motor", podría deberse a defectos de fabricación en las bielas y el cigüeñal. GM determinó que las fallas del motor se debieron a múltiples problemas de fabricación y calidad por parte de sus proveedores.
El nuevo análisis técnico abarca 286.000 vehículos que formaron parte de la investigación original de la NHTSA, pero que no estuvieron incluidos en el retiro voluntario que GM realizó a principios de este año.
La NHTSA inició una investigación en enero sobre 877.710 vehículos de GM debido a informes de fallas en el motor de vehículos con motor V8.
Tras su propia investigación, GM retiró del mercado 721.000 SUV y camionetas con motores de gasolina V8 de 6,2 litros el 29 de abril, afectando a los modelos Cadillac Escalade y Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban y Tahoe, y GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon y Yukon XL de los años 2021 a 2024 en todo el mundo.
Sin embargo, la NHTSA comenzó a recibir quejas sobre motores no incluidos en la retirada, instalados en vehículos Chevrolet Silverado 1500 y GMC Sierra 1500 de los años 2019 a 2024, y en vehículos Chevrolet Suburban y Tahoe, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL y Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV de los años 2021 a 2024.
En un informe del 23 de octubre, la Oficina de Investigación de Defectos (ODI) de la NHTSA indicó que planeaba iniciar un análisis de ingeniería tras recibir 1.157 informes de fallas en los cojinetes del motor.
La investigación evaluará con mayor detalle el alcance y la gravedad del problema potencial, así como los riesgos potenciales para los vehículos que no estaban incluidos en el alcance del problema inicial, según informó la agencia. De los informes recibidos, 173 no están cubiertos por el llamado a revisión de GM.
“La ODI sigue recibiendo un número significativo de informes de fallas de motor en vehículos que no están incluidos en el alcance del llamado a revisión 25V-274”, indica el informe de la agencia. “Esto representa un riesgo potencial para la seguridad que justifica una investigación más exhaustiva”.
La NHTSA cerró su investigación anterior basada en el llamado a revisión de GM, según informó la automotriz.
“La seguridad y la satisfacción de nuestros clientes son la máxima prioridad para todo el equipo de GM, y seguimos cooperando con la evaluación de la NHTSA sobre este asunto”, declaró Bill Grotz, portavoz de GM, en un comunicado.
GM también informó que tiene conocimiento de 12 presuntos accidentes y 12 presuntas lesiones en Estados Unidos que podrían estar relacionadas con la condición subyacente identificada en su llamado a revisión voluntario.
Sin embargo, todas las lesiones específicamente denunciadas fueron leves o no físicas, y la mayoría no estuvieron relacionadas con accidentes.
Un portavoz indicó que se recomienda a los consumidores afectados por la llamada a revisión que acudan a su concesionario local para que inspeccionen el motor y, de ser necesario, lo reparen o lo reemplacen.
GM informó durante el aviso inicial de la llamada a revisión que los vehículos que superen la inspección recibirán un aceite de mayor viscosidad, lo que también requerirá un nuevo tapón de llenado de aceite y el reemplazo del filtro de aceite.
