Nueva ley amplía los servicios de Protección hasta los 21 años
OKLAHOMA CITY – El gobernador Kevin Stitt firmó el Proyecto de Ley del Senado 1806, legislación que amplía los servicios de acogida desde los 18 hasta los 21 años para ayudar a proporcionar estabilidad y apoyo a los jóvenes adultos que están en proceso de transición a la edad adulta.
El Proyecto de Ley del Senado 1806 permite que las personas elegibles que actualmente reciben servicios a través de Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS) permanezcan voluntariamente en cuidado hasta los 21 años. La medida también permite que ciertos jóvenes adultos que ya han salido de la acogida puedan volver a los servicios si tienen menos de 21 años.
Pro Tem Paxton dijo que muchos jóvenes adultos que salen del sistema de acogida enfrentan desafíos importantes al pasar a la independencia y a menudo carecen de los sistemas de apoyo de los que muchos otros dependen en la edad adulta temprana.
"Quiero agradecer al gobernador Stitt por firmar esta importante legislación y por reconocer la necesidad de apoyar mejor a los jóvenes adultos que salen del sistema de acogida", dijo Pro Tem Paxton. "Este fue un esfuerzo colaborativo entre legisladores, OKDHS y defensores que se preocupan profundamente por ayudar a estos jóvenes a tener éxito. Trabajando juntos, estamos asegurando que más habitantes de Oklahoma tengan la oportunidad de construir futuros estables y productivos. Para muchos de estos jóvenes adultos, cumplir 18 no significa que de repente tengan los recursos o el apoyo necesarios para prosperar. Esta ley ayuda a proporcionar estabilidad durante un periodo crítico de sus vidas y les proporciona una base más sólida para el éxito a largo plazo."
La medida se aplica a personas de 18 a 21 años que permanecen bajo custodia de OKDHS, así como a ciertos jóvenes adultos que alcanzaron la permanencia mediante tutela o adopción después de los 16 años pero que ya no cuentan con el apoyo de los cuidadores (Foster Care).
Para calificar, los participantes deben ser:
• Completar la educación secundaria;
• Matriculado en la universidad o en un programa de tecnología profesional;
• Participar en programas de preparación para el empleo o de fuerza laboral;
• Trabajar al menos 80 horas al mes; o
• No pudo participar debido a una condición médica documentada.
La participación en el programa de servicios extendidos es voluntaria. El Proyecto de Ley del Senado 1806 entra en vigor el 1 de julio.

New Law extends Foster Care services to-21years old
OKLAHOMA CITY – Governor Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 1806, legislation extending foster care services from age 18-to- 21 to help provide stability and support for young adults transitioning into adulthood.
Senate Bill 1806 allows eligible individuals currently receiving services through Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS) to voluntarily remain in care until age 21. The measure also permits certain young adults who previously aged out of foster care to opt back into services if they are under 21.
Pro Tem Paxton said many young adults leaving foster care face significant challenges as they transition into independence and often lack the support systems many others rely on in early adulthood.
“I want to thank Governor Stitt for signing this important legislation into law and for recognizing the need to better support young adults aging out of foster care,” Pro Tem Paxton said. “This was a collaborative effort between lawmakers, OKDHS and advocates who care deeply about helping these young people succeed. By working together, we’re ensuring more Oklahomans have the opportunity to build stable, productive futures. For many of these young adults, turning 18 doesn’t mean they suddenly have the resources or support needed to thrive. This law helps provide stability during a critical period in their lives and gives them a stronger foundation for long-term success.”
The measure applies to individuals ages 18 to 21 who remain in OKDHS custody, as well as certain young adults who achieved permanency through guardianship or adoption after age 16 but no longer have caregiver support.
To qualify, participants must be:
• Completing secondary education;
• Enrolled in college or a career technology program;
• Participating in employment-readiness or workforce programs;
• Working at least 80 hours per month; or
• Unable to participate due to a documented medical condition.
Participation in the extended services program is voluntary.
Senate Bill 1806 takes effect July 1.
