Bartlesville Native Participates in the First Ever Tulsa Virtual Navy Week
MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Capt. Kemit Spears, commanding officer of the 22nd Naval Construction Regiment, from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, will participate in a “Ship2Shore” live event on Oct. 6 as part of the inaugural Tulsa Virtual Navy Week.
Spears, a 1990 Bartlesville High School graduate and Civil Engineer, is currently stationed in Gulfport, Mississippi. Viewers can follow the event live at https://www.facebook.com/NavyOutreach.
To help Americans stay connected, the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO) has developed an array of outreach content and harnessed the power of social media to deliver it, said Lt. Cmdr. Ben Anderson, NAVCO’s event-planning department head.
“The citizens of Tulsa trust their Navy to do what's right around the world, and during this COVID-19 crisis we don't want to lose any opportunity to tell them what we're doing and thank them for that trust,” Anderson said, adding, “Our hope is that we can use virtual means to have safe and meaningful conversations and build lasting relationships with their community, and in communities across the state of Oklahoma."
One aspect of virtual outreach are live interviews, hosted on NAVCO’s social media sites with sailors around the country and world. The goal of these interviews is to inform and educate Americans on the Navy’s mission and purpose.
Tulsa Virtual Navy Week is being held from Oct. 5 to Oct. 9. The community will have the opportunity to celebrate Tulsa Navy Week from the comfort and safety of their own homes during that time with a range of programming.
