“OKCPS necesita a Deisy. Oklahoma necesita a Deisy”

La decisión del Presidente Trump de rovocar l(DACA) Acción Ejecutiva de Acción Diferida para niños que ingresaron al país en la infancia y darle seis meses al Congreso para desarrollar y aprobar un plan de inmigración afecta a aproximadamente 800,000 vidas en los Estados Unidos. Millones si se cuentan los amigos, vecinos y compañeros cuyas vidas tocan estos soñadores.
Es difícil referirse a un número tan grande como 800,000. Así que centrémonos en una mujer joven que se mudó aquí con su madre soltera cuando tenía 6 años de edad. Su madre pensaba que permanecería por seis meses, para ayudar a un miembro de la familia en necesidad, pero vio a su hija aprendiendo el Inglés y prosperar en la escuela. Ella decidió quedarse en Oklahoma para que su hija reciba una buena educación e ir a la Universidad. Esta madre tenía un trabajo profesional en México, pero trabajó dos puestos de trabajo durante 10 años en McDonald's para poder cubrir y proporcionar las necesidades de su hija.
Esta joven empezó a trabajar a la edad de 15, a la vez que asistía a la escuela Putnam City West High School. Se vio obligada a abandonar un empleo cuando su empleador, un administrador, temeroso de represalias debido a todos los trabajadores indocumentados que trabajan. La empresa hizo todo lo posible para mantenerla, pero al final la dejó ir. Todavía habla de tener miedo, pero decididos a continuar y llegar a su meta de ir a la Universidad. Empezó a trabajar en un supermercado mexicano. Era mucho menos interesante que su anterior trabajo, pero ella mantuvo su mirada en su objetivo y salir adelante.
Trabajando todo el tiempo a la vez que asistía a la Universidad, esta joven se graduó de la Universidad de Oklahoma. Ella comenzó a trabajar en las escuelas públicas de Oklahoma City (OKCPS) en el Departamento de servicios Cultural y lengua. Este departamento es fundamental para OKCPS, donde la población estudiantil es 54% hispanos y se hablan más de 40 idiomas. Se mudó al Departamento de relaciones comunitarias y actualmente se desempeña como Gerente. Su trabajo para unir a la comunidad con nuestras escuelas requiere energía, dedicación y trabajo duro. Ella y sus colegas trabajan diariamente con la Fundación, y se apoyan unas a otras.
Esta joven inició la escuela de leyes en la Universidad de Oklahoma City el pasado otoño a la vez que trabajaba a tiempo completo. Los préstamos estudiantiles federales no son posibles para soñadores, el financiamiento es difícil. Sin embargo, esta joven fué persistente. Ella también se casó el año pasado, y su boda estabo lleno de belleza y amor.
Esta joven tiene un nombre y una sonrisa que ilumina la habitación. Su nombre es Deisy Escalera, y ella es inteligente, trabajadora y estricta. Ella tiene un corazón enorme y pasa sus días trabajando para hacer las cosas mejor para los estudiantes de OKCPS. Hay muchas como ella en el distrito y dentro de nuestras escuelas. Son americanos en sus corazones y en sus mentes.
OKCPS necesita a Deisy. Oklahoma necesita a Deisy. El Presidente y el Congreso deben hacer lo correcto para ella y los 800,000 soñadores que están contribuyendo y haciendo nuestro mundo mejor.

“OKCPS needs Deisy. Oklahoma needs Deisy”

President Trump’s decision to reverse the executive action on Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and allow Congress six months to develop and pass an immigration plan affects approximately 800,000 lives in the United States. Millions if you count the friends, neighbors and co-workers whose lives these Dreamers touch.
It is difficult to get one’s head around a number as large as 800,000. So let’s focus on one young woman who moved here with her single mother when she was 6 years old. Her mother thought she would stay for six months to help a family member in need, but she saw her daughter learning English and thriving in school. She decided to stay in Oklahoma in order for her daughter to receive a good education and go to college. This mother had a professional job in Mexico, but worked two jobs for 10 years at McDonald’s just to make ends meet and provide for her daughter.
This one young woman started working at the age of 15, as she attended Putnam City West High School. She was forced to leave one job when her employer, a property manager, became fearful of retribution because of all the undocumented workers they employed. The company did everything it could to keep her, but in the end let her go. She still talks about being afraid, yet determined to carry on and reach her goal of going to college. She went to work at a Mexican grocery store. It was much less interesting to her than her previous job, but she kept her eye on her goal and kept going.
Working all the way through college, this one young woman graduated from the University of Oklahoma. She began working at Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) in the Language and Cultural Services Department. This department is critical to OKCPS, where our student population is 54% Hispanic and 40-plus languages are spoken. She moved to the community relations department and currently serves as the manager. Her work to engage community partners with our schools takes energy, dedication and hard work. She and her colleagues work daily with the Foundation, and we are extensions of each other’s teams.
This one young woman started law school at Oklahoma City University last fall while working full time. Federal student loans aren’t possible for Dreamers, so financing is difficult. But, this one young woman is determined. She also got married last year, and her wedding was filled with beauty and love.
This young woman has a name and a smile that lights up the room. Her name is Deisy Escalera, and she is smart, driven and focused. She has a huge heart and spends her days working to make things better for the students of OKCPS. There are many like her within the district and within our schools. They are American in their hearts and in their minds.
OKCPS needs Deisy. Oklahoma needs Deisy. The president and Congress must do the right thing for her and the 800,000 Dreamers who are contributing and making our world better.
