El Liderazgo Valiente de Zelenski

Son los momentos de crisis más agudos los que muchas veces despiertan al líder que vive en uno. En estos días, cuando somos testigos de una nueva guerra que desangra a Europa, nos ha impresionado el coraje del presidente de Ucrania, Volodímir Zelenski. Estamos profesando hacia él sentimientos de admiración, porque nos está proponiendo un liderazgo auténtico, generoso, guiado por un propósito superior.

No hay en él tibieza, vacilaciones, una falsa prudencia. Todo lo contrario, hay valentía y hay claridad, no solamente hacia su enemigo, el presidente Putin, sino también hacia sus mismos aliados, a los que les reclama cada vez que tiene la oportunidad.

Cuando Estados Unidos le ofreció a él y a su familia salir del país, Zelenski le hizo saber al presidente Biden que lo que necesitaba eran armas y no un pasaje. Este presidente nos recuerda al valiente David, quien se enfrentó al gigante Goliat.

Vale entonces la pena resaltar algunas de las lecciones de liderazgo que nos está ofreciendo Zelenski desde el frente ucraniano. La primera es que, en los momentos de crisis, cuando la incertidumbre es máxima, un líder se orienta a sí mismo y a sus seguidores hacia un propósito común. Es la visión compartida lo que logra la motivación y la unidad, y al mismo tiempo trasciende un presente y promete un futuro. Podríamos decir que, en un momento de crisis, un líder guía a sus aliados hacia un futuro que quiere emerger.

Un segundo aprendizaje es que un líder auténtico lidera desde el coraje, y no desde el miedo. Me gusta la palabra coraje porque etimológicamente significa la acción del corazón, la que nace desde nuestro yo auténtico. Es la expresión pura, valiente, sincera de su esencia que transforma a un individuo en un líder positivo, consciente.

Tercero, el líder auténtico también orienta sus comportamientos en alineación con valores que, en momentos de crisis, se traducen en virtudes. En estos días, el presidente Zelenski está transformando en virtudes valores como el coraje, el sacrificio, el servicio extremo, el patriotismo, la libertad y la independencia. Son valores muy altos, por los cuales el presidente de Ucrania está demostrando que vale la pena dedicar la vida, hasta estar listo para perderla, heroicamente.

Finalmente, como ha resaltado Adam Grant esta semana, lo que marca a un buen líder no es solamente la muestra de coraje, sino también su capacidad de conectarse con los sentimientos de un pueblo. Escribe Grant que los líderes son aquellas personas que “vemos como ejemplo de los ideales del grupo y actuando en el mejor interés del grupo”.

No tenemos que esperar a una crisis en nuestra vida para vivir estas lecciones de liderazgo. Las podemos implementar aprovechando las oportunidades que nos ofrece la cotidianidad. Contribuiríamos así a mejorar las organizaciones y las comunidades de las cuales hacemos parte.
