Nueva Propuesta de Ley Criminaliza inmigrantes indocumentados en Oklahoma
OKLAHOMA CITY – El representante Arturo Alonso-Sandoval, D-Oklahoma City, miembro del Caucus Latino de Oklahoma, alzó la voz en la Cámara de Representantes contra el HB 1362, un proyecto de ley que considera innecesario y con posibles problemas constitucionales.
Esta propuesta, que fue aprobada con 73 votos a favor y 16 en contra, haría que los inmigrantes indocumentados arrestados por cualquier violación criminal sean automáticamente culpables de un delito grave. Por otro lado, Rep. Arturo Sandoval logro la aprobación de la propuesta de ley HB1910. Este proyecto de ley crea el programa de costos compartidos de Agricultura Urbana y Conservación para abordar la seguridad alimentaria urbana. El proyecto de ley ahora se dirige al Senado.

New Bill Criminalizes Undocumented Immigrants in Oklahoma
OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Arturo Alonso-Sandoval, D-Oklahoma City, a member of the Oklahoma Latino Caucus, spoke out in the House of Representatives against HB 1362, a bill he considers unnecessary and with potential constitutional issues.
This proposal, which passed by a vote of 73 to 16, would automatically make undocumented immigrants arrested for any criminal violation automatically guilty of a felony. Consequently, they would face at least five years in prison, a $35,000 bond and the possibility of deportation.
"This bill not only goes against the values of Oklahoma, but also against the principles of this country," Alonso-Sandoval said. "Oklahoma needs workers to fill essential jobs, and when we continue to attack undocumented immigrants, we reduce the services and tax revenues that benefit our state. Undocumented immigrants are estimated to contribute $227 million in taxes each year. In addition, there are already state and federal laws regulating immigration, so this measure is completely unnecessary and purely political."
The legislator also stressed that many of the people affected by this proposal are workers who support their families and contribute to the community. "These types of laws weaken the social fabric of Oklahoma and put more pressure on our law enforcement. I've spoken to police officers who have told me that measures like this only make their job harder," he explained.
In addition, he warned about the danger of turning what in many cases is only a civil offense into a serious crime. "This should concern us all. If we continue to pass laws like this, people are going to be afraid to collaborate with the police, which will affect our public safety. It could also have serious consequences for the economy, employment and the stability of many families in our state," Alonso-Sandoval concluded.
On the other hand, Rep. Arturo Sandoval achieved the approval of HB1910. This bill creates the Urban Agriculture and Conservation cost-sharing program to address urban food security. The bill now heads to the Senate.
