Niño de 10 años compartió historia de sobreviviente de accidente cerebrovascular

Oklahoma.-Cada año en mayo es el Mes de Concientización sobre el Accidente Cerebrovascular y el pequeño Emmanuel (Manny) Rosales, de 10 años, es una prueba de que le puede pasar a cualquier persona a cualquier edad.

Fue una noche normal para la familia Rosales en agosto de 2022. Manny se había bañado y había sido metido en la cama, cuando comenzó su pesadilla. "Manny entró en mi habitación y estaba actuando de manera extraña", dice Eva Rosales, la madre de Manny. "Le pregunté si estaba bien y no respondió, así que llamé a mi hija, Maricarmen, a la habitación".

Maricarmen Rosales es la hermana de Manny. Resultó ser una técnica de atención al paciente en la unidad de accidentes cerebrovasculares de INTEGRIS Health Southwest Medical Center. Ella notó de inmediato que Manny exhibía varios síntomas de accidente cerebrovascular. "Tenía dificultades para hablar y tenía una caída facial", recuerda. "Le dije a mi mamá que necesitábamos llevarlo al hospital de inmediato".

La familia Rosales llevó a Manny al departamento de emergencias de INTEGRIS Health Southwest Medical Center. Le cantaron todo el viaje para mantenerlo despierto. Una vez en el hospital, se confirmó que Manny estaba teniendo un estoque.

El equipo de accidentes cerebrovasculares administró rápidamente el medicamento anticoagulante conocido como activador del plasminógeno tisular, o tPA. Luego fue trasladado a Dallas para recibir atención pediátrica especializada, pero la familia cree que fue la rápida acción del personal de INTEGRIS Health lo que le salvó la vida esa noche. "Manny no tiene complicaciones a largo plazo porque mi hija reconoció los signos de accidente cerebrovascular y el personal de INTEGRIS Health administró rápidamente el tPA", declara Eva. "Gracias a ellos, Manny vuelve a ser un niño normal que disfruta de la vida".

La familia está compartiendo su historia con la esperanza de educar al público sobre qué buscar. Maricarmen anima a todos a conocer los signos de un derrame cerebral. "Utilicé BEFAST para identificar el accidente cerebrovascular en mi hermano".

Eva dice que no descarte o ignore los síntomas solo porque la persona es joven. "Cualquiera puede tener un derrame cerebral. Esto puede afectar a personas de todas las edades. Recomiendo que nos aseguremos de prestar atención a nuestros hijos y notar cuando su comportamiento no es normal. Siempre esté alerta".

10-Year-Old Shared a Stroke Survivor Story

Oklahoma.- Every year in May is Stroke Awareness Month and little 10-year-old Emmanuel (Manny) Rosales is proof it can happen to anyone at any age.

It was a normal night for the Rosales family in August 2022. Manny had taken a bath and been tucked into bed, when their nightmare began. “Manny came into my bedroom and was acting strangely,” says Eva Rosales, Manny’s mom. “I asked him if he was ok and he did not answer, so I called my daughter, Maricarmen, into the room.”

Maricarmen Rosales is Manny’s sister. She just so happened to be a patient care tech in the stroke unit at INTEGRIS Health Southwest Medical Center. She noticed right away that Manny was exhibiting several stroke symptoms. “He was having difficulty speaking and had a facial droop,” she remembers. “I told my mom we needed to get him to the hospital right away.”

The Rosales family took Manny to the emergency department at INTEGRIS Health Southwest Medical Center. They sang to him the entire drive to keep him awake. Once at the hospital, it was confirmed that Manny was having a stoke.

The stroke team quickly administered the clot busting medication known as tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA. He was then flown to Dallas for specialized pediatric care, but the family believes it was the quick action of the INTEGRIS Health staff that saved his life that night. “Manny has no long-term complications because my daughter recognized the signs of stroke and the INTEGRIS Health staff quickly administered the tPA,” declares Eva. “Because of them, Manny is once again a normal kid enjoying life.”

The family is sharing their story in hopes of educating the public on what to look out for. Maricarmen encourages everyone to know the signs of a stroke. “I used BEFAST to identify the stroke in my brother.”

Eva says not to dismiss or ignore symptoms just because the person is young. “Anyone can have a stroke. This can affect people of all ages. I recommend we make sure to pay attention to our kids and notice when their behavior is not normal. Always be alert.”
