President Trump Canceled Plans to Attend Summit of the Americas in Lima Perú

Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after President Trump announced he was canceling his plans to attend the 8th Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru.
“The President’s decision not to attend the Summit of the Americas is yet another retreat of U.S. leadership in our own hemisphere. In abandoning the bipartisan tradition of U.S. presidents attending this critical gathering, President Trump is losing an opportunity to strengthen the critical economic partnerships and security cooperation required to advance our national interests. If the Administration is serious about addressing regional challenges related to drug trafficking, transnational organized crime, and the growing humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, the President must replace his pattern of inattention and insults with sustained strategic engagement.”
“Repeated chemical weapons use in Syria demands a coordinated international response and U.S. leadership, but our Commander in Chief must be capable of balancing multiple global priorities. This latest abdication of U.S. leadership only creates an opening for our competitors – including Russia and China – to expand their influence in the hemisphere, and reduces our ability to effectively promote our values and protect our interests. This should be a concern for all Americans.”

El senador Bob Menéndez (D-N.J.), Miembro de Más Alto Rango del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores del Senado, emitió la siguientes declaraciones después de que el presidente Trump cancelo sus planes de asistir a la VIII Cumbre de las Américas en Lima, Perú.
"La decisión del Presidente de no asistir a la Cumbre de las Américas es un paso hacia atrás para el liderazgo de los EE. UU. en nuestro propio hemisferio. Al abandonar la tradición bipartidista de los presidentes de EE. UU de asistir a esta reunión crítica, el presidente Trump está desperdiciando la oportunidad de fortalecer alianzas económicas críticas y cooperación de seguridad necesaria para avanzar nuestros intereses nacionales. Si la Administración se toma en serio el abordar los desafíos regionales relacionados con el tráfico de drogas, el crimen organizado transnacional y la creciente crisis humanitaria en Venezuela, el Presidente debe cambiar su patrón de desprecio e insultos por un compromiso estratégico sostenido."
"El uso repetido de armas químicas en Siria exige una respuesta internacional coordinada y el liderazgo de los EE. UU., pero nuestro Comandante en Jefe debe tener la capacidad de balancear múltiples prioridades mundiales al mismo tiempo. Esta última abdicación del liderazgo de los EE. UU. solo crea una oportunidad para que nuestros adversarios, incluidos Rusia y China, expandan su influencia en el hemisferio y reduzcan nuestra capacidad para promover de manera efectiva nuestros valores y proteger nuestros intereses. Esto debería preocupar a todos los estadounidenses."
